LCL Identifier: Innovation through co-creation

Biometric verification

For the creation of the LCL Identifier, the expertise of software companies ORIBI ID-Solutions and Perfect ID was called upon, among others. LCL approached ORIBI ID-Solutions because as a software company they are specialized in identity verification. Chino Klaverweide-Lorteije, commercial director at ORIBI ID-Solutions: “LCL asked us to modernize the access control of the data centers, whereby the identity had to be checked in an unmanned environment. Just a physical check of the identification document was not enough. They wanted to take security to the next level with biometric authentication; face comparison with photo and a palm registration.”

Perfect ID, a software company focused on biometric authentication, was called in for the palm registration. Director Marc Strackx: “We have developed a user-friendly biometric application that creates a unique key based on a palm vein scan. This allows us to offer multifactor authentication based on Fujitsu’s PalmSecure sensor. The ORIBI party has built this into their solution.”

Co-creation

The importance of co-creation came out in the coming together of different expertises. That was still a challenge at times. Klaverweide-Lorteije: “We sat down with a number of important parties for LCL. One of them was the party responsible for the software used to register the visitors to LCL. And of course also with the partner of the palm reader; all that has to come together in one package. Just connecting the software systems together was a challenge. In order to make these connections, many discussions were held with partners. Also with regard to the test process of the LCL Identifier, there was a lot of consultation in which each party contributed its own expertise in an equal manner.”

Privacy safeguards

There was also intensive collaboration to ensure the privacy of the identity check. Strackx: “The LCL Identifier includes two-factor authentication, which is currently the highest form of authentication in terms of security. Because it checks something physical and biometric, privacy is guaranteed. A person is himself the bearer of the data, namely the palm of his hand and a resulting code, so it cannot be tampered with. Klaverweide-Lorteije confirms this: “The software has been configured in such a way that we can guarantee all the elements of privacy. Information is asymmetrically encrypted so that no one can gain access to it just like that. Privacy-specific information is shielded.”

Positive collaboration

Klaverweide-Lorteije looks back on a very positive collaboration. “In the beginning it was difficult to get everything on the same wavelength, but during the project you saw the parties grow towards each other. We had to steer it and we needed a lot of information from the other parties. Partly thanks to LCL’s mediation, something really good came out of it. The LCL Identifier is a huge addition to our product range. For us this was also a fantastic project to do. We are proud that we were able to contribute to this.”

Strackx agrees. “What I always encounter with integration projects is that you notice big differences in how companies manage it. If the communication is not good with the parties, then you get problems with the integration. At LCL, the entire project went well with the necessary expertise. There were issues with the integration, but they were resolved smoothly. Co-creation is the most important thing; that parties have the necessary trust in each other to find a solution together. LCL had a key role, without their communication it would have been difficult to make such a project a great success.”
